The news is now out. Not only will there be Steven Wilson-remixed 3-disc Deluxe sets (with new 5.1 and Stereo mixes) of Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1970), and Tarkus (1971), but those will definitely be followed up with new 5.1 and Stereo remixes of Pictures At An Exhibition (1971), Trilogy (1972), Brain Salad Surgery (1973), and Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends…Ladies & Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake And Palmer (1974).

The discs will not only contain the new Wilson remixes, but will also include outtakes.

These sets will also (SURPRISE!) be released in the US via Razor & Tie Records.  The planned US release date (for Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Tarkus) is set at September 11.  There aren’t set dates for the other four intended ELP classics.

Even more special is the fact that these albums (at least, for sure ELP, and Tarkus) will be released not only on CD/DVD Deluxe Editions, but will see reissue on LP and DD, with the digital files being remastered by Brad Blackwood for iTunes.

Pre-orders via the band’s site will offer the discs with ELP tees.  For those, go here.

  1. I’m still confused on these releases. Will they or won’t they have high-res stereo and/or surround? It seriously changes EVERY time I read a new update.
Will someone please clear this up for me. Thanks!

    1. I have an official sellsheet on the first two, and they indicate hi-res files, both 5.1 and Stereo, to be found on DVD.

  2. Steven Wilson tweeted this on 12 Jul: “The ELP / Tarkus reissues will include full res DVDAs – I talked them into it, but it’s just meant delaying the release a little longer.:

So there you have it – Matt’s sellsheet looks to be correct!

  3. Another update from Steven Wilson today – many thanks to QuadraphoniceQuad:

Hi again folks, a little update:

Although Sony may not have seen your petition, I was certainly aware of it and the enthusiasm for these being issued on a high res format. In fact we do owe Sony our gratitude – they basically fired their regular authoring house from the job (after a pretty poor effort) and have taken a leap of faith in delaying release and trusting me enough to have “my guy” Neil do the job instead – politics in major companies does not often allow for these kind of things to happen, so respect to them for that.

    A couple of other things:

    – the mixes on the DVDA (including the new stereo mix) are flat transfers – unlike on the CD, no mastering has been done, EQ, limiting or compression.

    – I took the opportunity to reconsider and to scrap the idea of the alternative Tarkus running order, so the stereo bonus material now appears at the end of a new mix of the complete album including that classic Are you Ready Eddy (-;

The 5.1 remixing work has taken a bit of a backseat to my own music for the last year (the 2 ELPs were done last Summer, release schedules take a while to catch up), but I have just finished a mix of another classic 1972 album, not progressive rock this time – news on that soon I hope.

    Best
    SW

  4. Thanks for the info. The intial news from Steven Wilson himself said DTS surround. I think he even had a second update stating no high res.
I think I’ll order the day after release, just so I can read the reviews to make 100% sure.
