I’ve always enjoyed the work of Martha Wainwright. She does come from a deeply talented family that includes her father, Loudon Wainwright III, her mother, Kate McGarrigle (of Kate & Anna McGarrigle recording duo), who died of cancer in 2010, and her brother, Rufus Wainwright. She released her first solo album in 1997 called Ground Floor. It was released as a cassette only issue. Her first major label release was with Rounder Records’ explorative sub-label, Zoë Records. It was a cathartic self-titled release that showed success that was further seen in her equally cleansing, if not angrier, 2nd release, I Know You’re Married But I’ve got Feelings Too, back in 2008.
In 2012, Martha Wainwright switched labels ending up on V2 Records with Come Home To Mama. Martha does not simply release albums. She takes her sweet time in producing a very good experience. I can personally recommend her folk-styled rock songs to you. I’ve enjoyed each one (except for Ground Floor, which I didn’t know existed until writing this piece).
On November 11, Martha Wainwright, keeping with her lengthy 3+ years between releases, will issue her latest album, Goodnight City. The new album is being released by Pias America. Goodnight City will contain twelve new songs, half of which are originals. The other half are songs contributed by Glen Hansard, Beth Orton, her brother, Rufus, and a few others.
