There’s a lot of vinyl coming up in the near future, particularly where reissues are concerned. I’m well aware that many have moved beyond the allure of vinyl having already reacquired much of their past vinyl collection in CD and DD formats.  The seemingly logical train of thought is: why do it all over again, especially with more expensive, albeit higher grade vinyl reissues?  Why regress?  Regardless, for those that like the vinyl resurgence and are in the mode of reacquiring favorites, this issue of TAP has some cool reissues from the past for you.

Original Recordings Group will reissue the debut issue of Weather Report from the fine jazz fusion band, Weather Report.  It is planned as a 2LP, 180g weight, remastered at 45RPM special edition.  the release date is scheduled for January 7 of 2014.

Original Recordings Group also plan the specialized LP reissue of My Favorite Things, the 1960 jazz classic from John Coltrane for the same date of January 7 of 2014. As is Weather Report, My Favorite Things is planned for 180g-weight, 2LP, and also remastered in 45RPM.

Friday Music have two reissued, remastered vinyl LPs coming on January 7 of 2014.  The first is Girl Happy from Elvis Presley, which is being remastered onto 180g vinyl, with a new gatefold jacket.  The other is the Santana classic, Borboletta (1974).  Borboletta showcases Santana‘s rising interests in more jazz/funk fusion efforts.  This reissue will feature remastering, 180g vinyl, and a gatefold jacket.

On December 17, Friday Music will release vinyl for Birth Of The Grateful Dead, Volume One – The Studio Sides.  This Limited Edition set will contain seventeen rare studio recordings from the years 1965 through 1967 with gatefold packaging.

Rhino goes the ‘best of’ route for vinyl with the planned releases of Chicago IX: Chicago’s Greatest Hits (1975) (without “Dialogue”, which pissed me off at the time), Greatest Hits (1976) by James Taylor, and both volumes of Best Of the Doobies releases (Best Of The Doobies – 1976, without “Another Park, Another Sunday” also pissing me off, and Best Of The Doobies Volume II – 1981) featuring The Doobie Brothers‘ hits.  All vinyl reissues are planned for December 3.

On December 10, Verve Records will release Ella Fitzgerald: The Voice Of Jazz on CD (yeah, we’re out of LP territory now).

As expected, Legacy and RCA are pulling Playlist: The Very Best of Lou Reed back into service with 2003 remasters.  The previous release of this title was 2008.  It is scheduled for December 3.  With Lou Reed titles flying off the shelves since his death, I’m predicting a Complete Album series box like the recent Harry Nilsson, and Herbie Hancock sets from the label in the not too distant future.  No tip-off, just guessing.

Orange Mountain Music have Galileo Galilei coming on 2CD.  The music is of the Philip Glass opera of the same name releasing on November 26.

Playing In Traffic Records have new Los Lonely Boys music coming on January 21 of 2014.  The album is being called Revelation.

Island Records will release Tuck Box containing all of the Nick Drake albums.  In addition to the collected set of Drake albums, there are two other CDs, Made To Love Magic, a disc filled with outtakes, etc, and Family Tree, a uniquely collected set of family recordings.  The 5CD Box is slated for December 10.

Cleopatra Records have Live In Stockholm – March 10, 1975 featuring the performance of Greenslade on the calendar for December 3, CD and LP.

Squirrel Thing Recordings will release a 19-track recording of songs from Molly Drake.  Molly Drake is Nick Drake’s mother.  This is scheduled for November 26.

Analogue Productions will release a Stereo Hybrid SACD of Dusty In Memphis by Dusty Springfield, planned for release on January 21 of 2014.

Chapel Productions will reissue a long out of print album from Sniff “N The Tears, No Damage Done (1992) on CD scheduled for December 10.

And finally, Can will issue a vinyl LP Box set with all of their studio albums remastered and reissued onto 180g vinyl and housed in a linen wrapped Box.  An additional bonus LP of Can Live (which will be unavailable anywhere but in this set) is included.  Also added to this box will be a set of five posters, and a 20-page 12″ booklet with photos, and new notes.  The downside?  It’s slated to cost $485.  You’re going to have to be a serious Can fan wanting new remasters on vinyl to shell out the money needed to acquire this one. Can Vinyl Box is slated for December 10 via Mute Records.
