In the smoke of Fairport Convention tragedies and departures, a new Folk/Rock band arose assuming the name of Steeleye Span. Starting with departing Fairport Convention bassist, Ashley Hutchens, Steeleye Span was formed. With the release of their debut album in 1970, Steeleye Span met with success in the UK market. While Ashley Hutchens lasted with the band for only three years and three albums, Steeleye Span went on to even greater fame. Career produced 24 studio albums across 50 years.
On May 13, Chrysalis Records will release an expansive 12CD compilation career Steeleye Span Box that will cover the 1972-1983 years. In that box, there will feature 145 tracks of which 46 are previously unreleased. Some are live performance tracks, others are outtakes and alternate tracks. A packed in 56-page booklet will cover plenty of ground for the innovative band. While some of the previously unreleased tracks are newly remastered for 2022, most of the original albums feature older remasters. (I’ve left remaster information after each song in the listing below.) The clamshell box is being called Good Times of Old England: Steeleye Span 1972-1983.
