Brian May is best known as the guitar wizard of Queen who has evolved past the confines of the band to work with other luminaries. To date, he has maintained many of his side project works on tape and has released some in his Brian May Gold Series. One such set of sessions involves two days in April (21st, 22nd) of 1983 at The Record Plant in LA. There, he recorded tracks with Eddie Van Halen, Alan Gratzer, Phil Chen, and Fred Mandel. During this time, they recorded some songs that were released as a 3-track mini album. One of the songs was an electrified cover of “Star Fleet” from the cartoon of the same name. And there’s more even than that.
On July 14, Brian May will re-release the Star Fleet track as well as the songs that originated in those two days of sessions. In addition to the mini album, which has been remixed completely, there will be a collection of takes that feature 8 Eddie Van Halen blistering solos that are not the same every time, a product that May was enthused about. The box, which is being called Star Fleet Project + Beyond, will add in a 7″ vinyl single edit of “Star Fleet” on the double A-side, and “Son of Star Fleet”, both newly remixed. A 180g-weight Transparent Red vinyl press cut at half-speed of the original release is in the box. An immersive booklet and a badge are packed in.
Star Fleet Project + Beyond will be issued in a 2CD/1LP/7″ Single Box, CD (with just the content of the first CD only – no sessions takes), DD, 1LP (black vinyl press), 1LP Color Picture Disc LP, and Cassette. Additionally, there will be bundles that include CD/LP, CD/7″ Single, bundles with tee-shirts, and a vinyl box set. An Ultimate Box that includes EVERYTHING is on sale.
