“The Song’s the thing/Wherein I’ll catch the ear of the king.”

Only slightly less gonzo than “Genesis,” the latest Devin Townsend single melds gentle acoustic singer-songwriter, anthemic chorale sing-alongs, death metal snarls, and ear-catchingly deft drumming (courtesy of Anup Sastry). On Empath, this song grounds the middle of the track listing, but as 2nd single, “Evermore” picks up the gauntlet thrown by “Genesis,” smacks its listeners across the cheek Bugs Bunny style, then slams the gauntlet back down on the concrete. “Don’t think you have this new Devin Townsend album figured out,” it says. “There’s so much more to know…so much more to feel.” And that might be of some help in a weird way.
