With the recent loss of Shane MacGowan, The Pogues closed a lengthy but fruitful legacy that includes four classic albums from the ’80s, and three in the ’90s . Of those, one was produced by Elvis Costello, one by Joe Strummer, and two by Steve Lillywhite. Three sold over half a million copies each, while the others performed close to that. The Pogues broke up, reassembled, and broke up again. In between those transformations, some members continued as another band (The Vendettas), and Shane MacGowan recorded as Shane MacGowan And The Popes. Their first album, the set that began it all, is Red Roses For Me. Debuted in 1984, Red Roses For Me blended traditional Irish styles and framed them with Punk leanings to conform with the predominate New Wave music of the time.
On October 18, Rhino Entertainment will revisit Red Roses For Me with a celebratory 40th Anniversary Edition. The original album will contain the 2013 mix so no new remastering here. The 2nd disc here will provide the six extra bonus tracks found on the 2004 reissue. Needless to say, Rhino does an excellent job of these things. Also on the 2nd disc will be 12 live performance tracks from The John Peel Show and other areas of performance. The Pogues have a 40th Anniversary celebration in place for shows.
Red Roses For Me 40th Anniversary will be reissued on CD, DD, and vinyl LP editions.
