The current lineup of Tangerine Dream is in a quantum state after the death of founding member, Edgar Froese. The band itself was always in a fluid motion. Of course, it had a peak era where the core members were well appreciated for their output and contributions to a vibrant Tangerine Dream entity. But as Edgar Froese would have it, the malleability of Tangerine Dream is the stuff of science.
The current lineup, which includes Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yumane, Ulrich Schnauss, and recently, Paul Frick, most of whom were in Tangerine Dream when Edgar Froese was alive, carry on the constantly changing sounds of the band. The Rolling Stones would not be The Rolling Stones if it were to lose most members. But Tangerine Dream defies that logic and remains Tangerine Dream just as Edgar wanted the band to progress. Maybe even better than was expected or even intended. This iteration of Tangerine Dream is identified by The Quantum Years. I rather like that.
On November 26, Tangerine Dream will release a new EP in preparation for the band’s next studio album, which is expected in March of 2022. This EP is called Probe 6-8. Designed with access to Edgar Froese’s exploratory musical constructs from 1977-2013, the new tracks from Probe 6-8 have a sound not unlike early Tangerine Dream, and yet it is as futuristic as can be. This is the ongoing strange magic of this current Tangerine Dream formation.
Probe 6-8 will provide five tracks of music, two of which are remixes of songs on this set. The opening track – “Raum” – runs over fourteen minutes in length (hear the single edit below). Probe 6-8 runs an amazing 40+ minutes making this EP a value! Interestingly, the music found on Probe 6-8 is said to be impossible to recreate exactly in a live setting.
Probe 6-8 will be made available on CD, DD, and 12″ vinyl EP/LP. You can order here.
