Progressive Epics. Classical Suites. Extended Jazz Improvisations. Some songs are just long, y’know—a matinee feature all to themselves. In this ongoing series, MusicTAP presents the best of long-form musical accompaniment for your weekend moods.

Matinee Feature for the Weekend of September 22-23, 2018: “How To Measure A Planet?” by The Gathering.

The title track to their 5th album, “How To Measure A Planet?” punctuates The Gathering’s double-CD exploration of new horizons by going even further afield of staple doom metal. The track is a short art-house film to itself, incorporating reverb-drenched whispers and found sound amongst musical elements of trance, ambient, and electronic avante garde. It was a bold, progressive move in 1998, and remains an intriguing experiment within the wider world of metal.
