The re-emergence of BMG as a big label has provided several opportunities for Rhino Records-like preservation and revisitation of classic and tested music. To that end, BMG has established The Masters Collection with an eye (ear) to providing an introductory approach to older artists. (Personally, I find this a good attempt if not a bit too late. With the audience that truly cares about physical media and the artists represented nearing retirement and with less expendable cash, the run to release great titles in new formats and better audio is nearing its end…I think.)
On July 27, watch for eight collected 2CD issues. Represented will be Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP), Status Quo. Peter Green, Donovan, Uriah Heep, Thomas Dolby, Lee “Scratch” Perry, and Richard Clayderman (yes, I had to look up, too. He’s a French pianist.) All releases will contain no ‘new’ remastering but will contain the best previous versions, often mixed from various remasters.
