The mere mention of John Coltrane brings a reverential awe into the air. The man was a master of the saxophone, especially his chosen alto sax. Once he was discovered and signed, Coltrane left behind a wealth of classic and memorable albums. He recorded for several labels that included Blue Note, Prestige, Atlantic Records, Savoy Records, and Impulse! Records. Over his professional career, he has played with many of the greats including the inimitable Miles Davis. John “Trane” Coltrane died in 1967 at the young age of 40.
On June 10, Atlantic Records will bundle together a collection of Coltrane albums as well as digging deep for the complete set of Mono recordings including his outtakes. The 6CD set, The Atlantic Years In Mono, will be released in a cloth-bound box. All of the tracks, 32 in all, will be newly remastered in their original Mono. One CD will contain the previously released The Coltrane Legacy (1970), also remastered.
There will also be a 6LP Box that will add in a collectible vinyl 7″ Mono single replica, “My Favorite Things, Parts I & II”. (Side A will contain “My Favorite Things, Part I”; Side B will contain “My Favorite Things, Part II”.)
A richly designed 32-page booklet will accompany the set. It will be filled with new liner notes, along with plenty of period photos by Lee Friedlander.
