The short-lived times of Joy Division (1976-1980) yielded only two brilliant Factory Records-released classics (Unknown Pleasures – 1979, Closer – 1980). The classicism of the time was defined by fresher sounds and the arrival of brave basement labels. But all of that served to deliver to us a time of new music that transitioned from the heavy arena sounds that music had gravitated to during the late ’60s and early ’70s to that of a simpler quality. Joy Division gave us that quality in spectacular songs that helped set the stage for the times they were in. Unfortunately, Ian Curtis would die. But even as Joy Division would transition into New Order, something was lost.
On September 25, Joy Division will release a massive 14CD/2DVD Boxed set filled to the rim with remastered live performances from 15 live performances all sourced from fan cassette recordings, soundboard recordings and broadcast recordings. The 2 DVDs will feature over 2.5 hours of live performances footage along with a new edit of the Malcolm Whitehead film, Joy Division. A 16-page booklet with new notes and photos is packed into a 12″x12″ lift-off lid box.
This momentous boxed set will be known as Eternal.
