MusicTAP is very happy to exclusively present the newest track from Piramid Scheme. Their upcoming E.P., Seen This Before, will be released very shortly and this first song, “Funtime Friend” is the perfect “taster”.
If you haven’t had the pleasure (yet), Piramid Scheme is a psych-garage-rock and dark power-pop band, based out of Washington D.C. In this second incarnation, which began in late 2018, they’ve been making music with overtones of the mean reds and psychedelic blues. Members include Lisa Said (the main driver), Richard Benjumea (DeSanguashington), Sarah Brooke Purgal (Laveaux), and Abner Jara (Bleeder). Lisa is Egyptian-American; Richard is Colombian-American Sarah is Filipino-American, Abner is Chilean and moved to D.C. from Chile two years ago. They’re all cross-cultural and bi-lingual, having either parents that immigrated, or in Abner’s case—directly immigrated to the USA and they rock in pure American fashion.
About the song, Ms. Said has some thoughts: “”Funtime Friend” is a song that was written free-form, stream-of-consciousness against the musical hook of the song.
When I step back, I realize I’m projecting the woes of dating and going out at my age in the modern world. I’m 42 and nontraditional and living in Washington, D.C. It’s been complicated for me to find people to go out with—as friends or whatever—because most people have their work or family obligations. And for me, as a woman who was dating before apps and copious texting, I feel the stress and the double standard. What is fine for a guy to want isn’t as easily accepted for me to want and express of myself, even in this modern dating cesspool.
n any case, we like-minded folks have each other to manage, wanting to do things a mix of old-school and modern at the same time. I’m lucky to have found my funtime friends to go out with. With our diverse backgrounds and ages— we find each other in D.C. As for the music, we liked that it is vaguely familiar, very hooky, and not too complex.”
So here it is – all meat-and-potatoes; the way it should be. Listen to “Funtime Friend” below…
Seen This Before will be released on Friday, January 31st, 2020.
