One of the bump starts to a new era of music occurred when the New York Dolls took to NYC stages, a club at a time. With their wild and daring approaches, the solidifying of Rock’s ‘late ’60s. early ’70s years began to shake like a 9.0 quake intent on creating new tectonic plates. With only two albums in release before their demise, the New York Dolls left a legacy that is still heard and felt.
Of course, over the years there were presented a series of official and ‘grey-market’ material but until the band regrouped (without the services of Johnny Thunders, who died in 1991, and Arthur Kane, who passed in 2004), no new fresh songs were brought out to the fan base. (But subsequent guitarist, Steve Conte, was musically good in his role as successor to the irreplaceable Johnny Thunders.)
On April 27, a 5CD Box, Personality Crisis: Live Recordings & Studio Demos 1972-1975, will add to the mystique of the band that never was able to complete their full intended journey. One of the essential elements of this package is a collection of early, pre-Mercury Records demo sessions. With a presentation of 46 demos recorded at three separate studios, with a few bonus tracks (over two CDs), and five live locations including two that were radio broadcasts (over three CDs), there is more than a fan could possibly want in this collectible boxed set. (Just gaze at the track-list below!)
This set is presented in a clamshell box along with an essential booklet of notes, photos, and credits! The box will house the CDs in individual cardboard wallets.
No one will ever replace the phenomenon that New York Dolls were. They couldn’t even do i themselves decades later with new recordings. After their demise, their placement created a world of different avenues, with only Johnny Thunders maintaining a hard-edged punk style with the Heartbreakers (and a legendary solo outing that included So Alone!)
