Much of the emerging music in the late ’70s led directly into the style and sounds so prevalent in the MTV-era early ’80s. So much of it was released that much of it floundered only to be found by savvy late night FM radio listeners. The list is long. One of those bands would include the music by The Pop Group. This UK-based band only released two albums before they quit in 1981. As a short-lived project with jazz infusion and experimentation, the two released albums were quite good and should have been recognized more with their Clash-styled anger.
On November 1, Mute Records will reissue The Pop Group‘s first post-punk album, Y. Originally issued in 1979, Y explored music as an explorative tool, and lyrics as a tool. The song, “She Is Beyond Good and Evil” was released prior to the album’s release and eventually ended up being included within its tracklist. Y will be newly remastered (at half-speed) for this 40th Anniversary reissue at Abbey Road Studios. “She Is Beyond Good and Evil”, and “3:38” will be included.
Y will be released on CD, DD, Cassette, and vinyl 2LP sets (black vinyl, and limited edition Inca Gold vinyl, signed – 50 copies only). A Definitive Edition Deluxe set is planned for issue with a 4LP set, and a 3CD set. The pricey 4LP vinyl box will provide the platters on 180g-weight vinyl, and include a 12″-sized booklet, 2 posters, high-resolution DD, the ten-track Alien Blood album, and the Y Live album. The 3CD set contains the same titles.
