In the late ’60s, a songwriter by the name of Laura Nyro would enter into the world of music with her first album. That album, her sole set with Verve Folkways was released in 1967, carrying a song that would be made famous first by Peter, Paul and Mary, then by Blood, Sweat & Tears. The song is “And When I Die”. Another tune on the More Than A New Discovery set was “Wedding Bell Blues”, a song that would gained traction for The 5th Dimension. “Stoney End” would make bank for Barbra Streisand. But the real beauty lies in the gorgeous Laura Nyro versions. As time went on, Laura Nyro would create gems like “Eli’s Coming”, “Blowin’ Away”, “Stoned Soul Picnic”, and “Save The Country”. All of these songs and more woud would be popularized by others. Laura Nyro was a genius songwriter that deserved better than she received.
On December 6, the fine folks at Madfish will release a serious set that will contain 19 CDs! On those CDs will be found all of her 10 studio albums newly remastered, 4 live albums, 2 previously unreleased live albums, a CD filled with her original 1966 demo tracks, and a CD filled with rarities and other live performance tracks. The heavy Limited Edition box, which house everything will include a bound coffee table book filled with 94 pages of photos, essays, remembrances and accolades. This important and momentous Box will be called Hear My Song: The Collection 1966-1995.
Sadly, Laura Nyro passed away in 1997 at the young age of 49 of ovarian cancer. But she lives on in other renditions of her great songs, and in collections like this one. Much thanks to Madfish for creating a complete immersive Box that will carry her enormous legacy far into the future.
