Soul survivor, living legend and national treasure Mavis Staples – she of The Staples Singers, Wattstax, and the one woman who said “no!” to Bob Dylan – continues her reign on the forthcoming album We Get By, out May 10.

Ben Harper takes the producer chair this time out, but make no mistake. Miss Staples has a message for you, and you ought to listen. The first single, “Change,” misses not a single step with a crunchy, bluesy gospel lament. I predict if the rest of the record is this good, and how could it not, it might land on several best-of year-end lists.

I know it’s only March, but I’m calling it now.
