Yo-Yo Ma has an immensely rich and enviable recording history with more than 100 studio recordings to his name. Five of those are with the Silk Road Ensemble. And in case you aren’t aware of Yo-Yo Ma, well…he is the premier cellist of our modern time.
Yo-Yo Ma studied at a young age at the famed and prestigious Julliard School. He received a Bachelor’s at Harvard, and acquired an honorary Doctorate from Harvard later. His skill on the instrument is virtually unmatched.
The Silk Road Ensemble was created to explore collaborations between artists as they unite to visit the historical Silk Road in music. With a non-set collection of artists, each Silk Road Ensemble release has been extraordinary and essential to the history of the Silk Road.
On April 22, Sony Classical, within their Masterworks series, will release the sixth Silk Road Ensemble recording. The album is called Sing Me Home. Sing Me Home will feature thirteen new tracks (see below), with a wide range of assisting artists like Bill Frisell, Abigail Washburn, Roomful Of Teeth, and Dima Orsho, among many great artists not listed here.
Throughout, Sing Me Home is filled with great performances that add beautifully to the collected and growing set of Silk Road Ensemble recordings. Anchored by the brilliant cello by Yo-Yo Maa, Sing Me Home should easily be as rewarding an experience as its previous inclusions to the series have been.
