John Coltrane – Some major John Coltrane release news has just been announced.  For those of you who own the old U.K. grey-market title from the Free Factory label called Live At Temple University 1966, you can go ahead and sell it because an official release of this show is coming out and will trump it.  Resonance Records, on September 23, will be releasing Offering: Live At Temple University as a 2-CD set of the entire show and in a vinyl set as well.  For more information on this release, please go to this link .  I have no idea if this will eventually go up for pre-order over at places like Amazon or not, but people are already jumping in to place orders from Resonance because this is not the kind of announcement that comes everyday.  Hopefully, this is a sign of more things to come from the Coltrane family.  Since we are speaking of artists who broke barriers, I hope this will also spur new Hendrix and Ravi Shankar releases from their respective families and companies too.

The Monkees – Via a message stated over at The Monkees official website, there is going to be a Rhino Handmade 3-CD Super Deluxe Edition which will be made for the debut album The Monkees – The Monkees.  Nobody has any idea yet what will make up the third disc and whether it will be a CD or DVD.  Speculation is running rampant as to the possibilities.  The set is supposed to be slated for November of this year.

Jackson Browne – In the head-scratch department, the supposed upcoming reissue for Late For The Sky from Jackson Browne that had been due this month from Browne’s own Inside Recordings has mysteriously disappeared from the Amazon pre-order page.  I have not received a cancellation notice yet.  I am wondering if Warner Brothers has gotten involved and wants to go further than just the Late For The Sky album or if they really want to pad it up?  We’ll see how this plays out.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – Some very exciting concrete and potential release news was reported on by Rolling Stone Magazine concerning Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.  The new upcoming all-Rock album will be called Hypnotic Eye.  It will be out on Warner Brothers/Reprise and is due out this Summer.  The other confirmed news is that there will likely be a new expanded reissue of the Wildflowers album coming out around Christmas Season.  One other project was announced as being possible.  Petty is also considering issuing another new live album.  So, there’s plenty for fans of Petty to be excited about.

Neil Young – Nobody appears to know what has become of the new A Letter Home album from Neil Young and when and if it will be scheduled for release.  This is on top of word that began to swirl that Archives 2 was actively being worked on.

The Kinks – Ditto for the Deluxe Edition releases for The Kinks albums Lola vs. Powerman & the Moneygroround and Live At Kelvin Hall along with a box set that had been mentioned.  Matt and I will not forget to update everybody if any further news arises concerning these missing in action releases.

  1. FYI – progressive metal veterans Opeth will release their new album (Pale Communion) on June 17 via RoadRunner.

  2. From JB’s web site tonight …2014 will also see two new Jackson Browne releases. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Late For The Sky, originally released in September 1974, the album has been re-mastered and will be released later this year on 180 gram vinyl (standard 33 1/3 RPM), all digital platforms, and also, on CD in a new eco-digipak in a partnership between Rhino Records and Inside Recordings. Also, this fall, Jackson will release a new studio album, the thirteenth of his career.

  3. I wouldn’t count on anything new happening with The Kinks 1960’s catalog anytime soon. BMG, who purchased Sanctuary Music from Universal seems to be intent on doing absolutely nothing with the Sanctuary properties. Very odd to buy a label then do nothing with it.
